Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
John 3:8-15 Holy Spirit of Jesus, move through my being as you will ... Our present society teaches and propagates the myth that we human beings can ultimately have control of everything to do with life and death. But every time the wind blows, a river overflows its banks or fire burns a landscape clean we are reminded of all that is beyond our control ... including the movement of the Holy Spirit of God on the face of the earth and behind the face of each man, woman and child. Jesus likens the Holy Spirit to wind that comes and goes as it wills, without human governance. It is good to remember that just as I cannot govern the wind, but can use it to power a windmill or fill the sails of my boat, so I cannot control the Holy Spirit of God by anything I think or say or do, but can let the Spirit empower my being and fill the sails of my soul when I lift them towards heaven. Will I welcome the Holy Spirit of God to blow through (the holes) in my heart, mind and strength and empower my life, by the will of God? Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. (Psalm 96:3) Spirit of God in the clear running water Blowing to greatness the trees on the hill. Spirit of God in the finger of morning: Fill the earth, bring it to birth, And blow where you will. Blow, blow, blow till I be But the breath of the Spirit blowing in me. John 3:1-8 Jesus made it very clear: “What is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above’”. Any baptised person has been washed by the Spirit of God and is birthed into the potential of growing into adulthood in life in the Spirit. Unfortunately, these days very few of the Baptized remember that they have been reborn through the sacrament of Baptism and forget to embrace and engage their spiritual life and all of its fullness. As much as I forget my identity as a beloved, Spirit-birthed child of God, I will muddle around in the swamps of selfish ease and go with the flow of the world. But as much as I remember my birth by the Spirit of God, I will live forward into Grace and Mercy by faith, hope and love more and more as I mature into the fullness of my identity as a child of God. Will I allow myself to be filled with the living breath of the Holy Spirit of God? Christ Jesus, remind me that I have been born of the Holy Spirit of God, no matter what challenges I face. Remind my brothers, my sisters and my children that they have been born of the Holy Spirit of God. Grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness... (Acts 4:, 23) Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe. St. Augustine of Hippo Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed! Subsequently, hard-heartedness has no place in us as disciples of Jesus, risen from the dead, as Easter people. ‘Doubting’ Thomas shows us the way to have our hardness of heart transformed into a tenderness of heart that readily admits error, readily forgives and just as readily then believes in the person and the power of Christ Jesus. When we, when I, see Jesus for who he really is, in all honesty I must allow my heart to be tenderized by his living presence. Is my heart tough or tender? Christ Jesus, help me be tender-hearted to God and to others. Bring your hand and feel the place of the nails, and do not be unbelieving, but believing. (John 2:27) Happiness isn’t something that depends on our surroundings…it’s something we make inside ourselves. Corrie Ten Boom Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed! Unfortunately, in the kingdom of the world, the flesh or the devil, it is not what makes sense, but what the populace feels - be it jealously, shame, hatred –that propels their actions. As much as the winds of change blow through the general population, feelings of contempt, confusion and control will sweep through the crowds and the judiciary and they will prey on those of us who are followers of Jesus, “the people who believe in Easter”, as we are tagged these days. If and when I am arrested for “spreading it among the people”, will I like Peter and John stand my ground as a follower of Jesus, and say, “I cannot keep from speaking about what [I] have seen and heard” ? Holy Spirit of Jesus, help me stand my ground as your follower. The Lord is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation... I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. (Psalm 118:2, 5) Actions speak louder than words. Let your words teach and your actions speak. St. Anthony of Padua Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed! Soon after they excitedly told their friends that Jesus was alive, he showed up in their midst! His greeting of “Peace be with you!” was in sharp contrast to their ‘startled’ and ‘terrified’ countenance; perhaps this is why Jesus rarely shows himself to us in person. What happened next is the natural and necessary follow up to any revelation of our Lord, whether by story or in person: Jesus projected his peace into their beings and ‘opened their minds’ to his real identity and crucial purpose in life, that is the fulfillment of God’s mercy and plan for the salvation of humanity. Today more than ever we need to return to our ‘companions on the journey’ and bear witness to our own experiences of Christ Jesus. Then he will ‘show up’ wherever two or three are gathered in his name. In this way we will receive his peace and be refreshed by his risen presence among us and will know beyond any shadow of doubt his identity as the living Son of Man who is the Son of God, and his role in our own salvation. How quick am I to participate in the confusing news items of the world, the flesh and the devil? How quickly do I receive and proclaim the good news of Jesus, risen from the dead? Christ Jesus, speed my steps to proclaim your good news and receive your peace. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. (Acts 3:20) Actions speak louder than words.
