Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
John 3:16-21
“Those who do what is true come to the light,” said Jesus. Sometimes I am interested in coming to light, but still participate in the half-truths of society –you can get rich quick; a successful person is a smart person; or it is important to look after yourself first - or the truths that I fabricate on my own: if I get a higher paying job, I’ll be more successful; I am too busy to help others, etc. These half-truths and outright deceits derail me from the light of Christ. Only as I do what is aligned with the mercy of Christ, when I ‘do what is true’, will I be able to enter fully into the tremendous light and glory of Christ’s life. Moment by moment, am I ready to perceive and to do ‘what is true’, according to the mercy of God? Christ Jesus, help me do what is true and come to the light. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. (Psalm 34: ) Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia. John 3:7-15
The saving grace of the Holy Spirit of God is always available, as Christ Jesus demonstrated so powerfully with his death and resurrection. I have a choice each moment of the day to stay ensconced in the drama and demons of present human conditions, or to transcend these and embrace the opportunity to be reborn from above. When I receive tragic news: will I descend into despair or smile into the face of the risen Lord? When I witness young people’s lives being sucked into the vortex of technology or other addictions: will I join the public hue and cry, passing judgements hither and yon, or will I allow the Prince of Peace to uphold my heart with compassion and connection? Christ Jesus, help me be born from above each moment of every day. Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead, and so enter into his glory. (Luke 24: 26) Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia. The risen Christ Jesus could have appeared to the council of the chief priests to vindicate himself and underscore the fact that he is the Son of God, as well as the Son of Man. Instead, though, the risen Lord met his disciples in the upper room, to encourage them and to draw them back into his light, his love and his life. Why? Because the disciples were full of awe and of joy at the news of their Master’s rising from the dead. The chief priests, on the other hand, met the news of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead with fear and treachery, trying to suppress the truth under a load of lies and money. The disciples embraced the truth and light of the Resurrection, while the chief priests tried to erase it from history. How do I receive the good news of Christ Jesus’ rising from the dead? Holy Spirit of God, help me embrace your risen Son. You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. (Psalm 16:11 ) Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia.
