Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
1 John 4:7-10 The hallmark of being a follower of Christ Jesus is love. Put another way, as much as I love like Jesus –as he spent his life’s energy to proclaim and to perform healing of the diseased, releasing of prisoners, and the raising of the dead, both literally and figuratively –that much I am truly his follower. This means that in each relationship, each event, and each circumstance of life, there is a way to love like Jesus; there is always a way to allow the Holy Spirit to love God and to love others through my thoughts, words and actions. Am I sufficiently prayerful with God who wills me, who loves me, to love like Jesus? Christ Jesus, through all of life’s circumstances, help me love as you love. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 118:26) Life is love, enjoy it. Life is mystery, know it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Matthew 2:1-12 When I keep the gold of all that I am and have, the frankincense of my prayers and the myrrh of my hurts and sufferings all to myself, I become a grasping, self-focussed, judgemental and complaining person. But when I, like the magi of old, present the gold of all my talents, my strengths, and successes to the glory of God, I become free to love and to be loved. Similarly, when I give the incense of my prayers, songs and reflections to the infant Jesus, I lose the sickening fascination with myself that often leads to unforgiveness, judgement, and anxiety and find freedom through intercession to be merciful, just as God is merciful. And when I release the myrrh of my own grief and sufferings not into the lives of others, but into the circle of love around the baby who was crucified to redeem humankind 33 years later, bitterness and despair are transformed into thanksgiving and hope in the eternal glory of God. Am I willing to hand over the gold, frankincense, and myrrh of my life to Christ Jesus? Holy Spirit help me give my gold, frankincense and myrrh to God... All who have this hope in Christ, purify themselves, just as he is pure. Is it the enemy of life sucking me into a culture of death, or is it the Holy Trinity: Father-Creator; Son – Healer and Redeemer; and Holy Spirit – Comforter, Protector and Teacher. If I subscribe to the program of the enemy and the master of death, then unforgiveness, gossip, and deceits play out in my life with little effort on my part. But if I subscribe to the agenda of the Creator of life, then the plan of righteousness and wisdom described in the Word of scripture and the Living Word of Jesus, become my operating system, and my thoughts, words and actions can become deliberate and life-giving entities in my own life, and the lives of others. Holy Spirit, help me subscribe to righteousness, not to sin. All who have this hope in Christ, purify themselves, just as he is pure. Similarly, it is the Holy Spirit of God who enters into our beings and displaces the sin and darkness that so easily finds its way into us. But just as I choose to clean up after a day’s activity, so it is I who must choose to be purified spiritually. If I continually busy myself with everything the world demands, in the human chase for comfort, personal glory and possessions, there will be a ‘greasy build up’ of ‘dead skin’ of sin on my being. But when I deliberately take time to pray and to walk with God as Jesus did, I open myself to all kinds of circumstances and events –even challenges and persecutions – that the Holy Spirit can use to purify my heart, mind and soul. Am I as committed to cleansing my spirit as my body? Holy Spirit, help me purify myself, just as Jesus is pure. All who have this hope in Christ, purify themselves, just as he is pure. A Blessed and Joyous Christmas Season and a Happy, Healthy, and Holy New Year to you and your family! John 1:19-28 Today’s society presents a wilderness experience with many twisting trails criss-crossing its barren deserts and cliffs of slippery shale. So often this wilderness of technology, ever-new stories of death and mass destruction, genetic modifications and shifting constitutions seems to be impenetrable and unwelcoming. Yet present day civilization is still made up of men, women and children who are still beloved sons and daughters of God, made in his image, and designed to love and to be loved. When a man, woman, or child walks with Christ, in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ life will always be nurtured within, and that person will begin to live abundantly and fruitfully. When I step out into the wilderness that is our present civilization, will I tremble in fear at the desolate shifting sands and slippery rockslides before me, or will I, like John the Baptist, enter into the highways and byways, and make straight a way for the Lord to enter into the experience of humanity? Christ Jesus, help me make straight the way for you in the wilderness. May God make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth. (Psalm 67) I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, "Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied, "Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way."
