Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
John 14:1-12 As a young adult I used to visit my grandmother at her tiny bed-sitting room at the retirement home where she lived. Within an hour of arriving, I would be napping on her bed, reveling in the warmth of her unconditional and welcoming love and her straight-forward wisdom. After this deep rest, we would eat a simple meal together and then I would head out into the world again, grounded and refreshed. Thank goodness there are many rooms in our Father’s house! We all need to visit Him regularly and rest in his eternal mercy and wisdom! Such visits are the antidote to all the trials, troubles and traumas we experience. Thomas asked Jesus for directions to His Father’s house, and Philip needed to know what our heavenly Father looks like, so that they could find their way there. Jesus’ surprising answers not only answered his disciples’ questions, but they have unfailingly guided all faithful men, women and children through the ages to our Abba’s, our Dad’s home. And with these answers, Jesus is still telling us today how to get to our Father’s place. As we spend time with Christ Jesus, and look to him for the truth, and the life beyond any death we encounter, we do come to recognize our Heavenly Father rest in His presence through our Master and Lord. Then we will have no problem finding our way home going forward into eternity. Today will I spend time with Christ Jesus, so I know how to get to my Father’s house and behold his (then familiar) face? Holy Spirit of Jesus, help me know you as the way to the Father. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me, I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. (Psalm 16:7-8) Let God’s people then recognize that they are a new creation in Christ, and with all vigilance understand by whom they have been adopted and whom they have adopted. St. Leo the Great. John 1:1-30 & Psalm 23 As the only non-Inuit staff member of the organization where I work, I draw out all the anguish and criticism of three generations of colonialist oppression that has been packed away for years in the hearts, minds, and souls of my co-workers. Yes! I can affirm that there are ravenous lions out there in the world! Not to mention the ‘normal’ wolves of unjust, death-dealing, and widely accepted high levels of addiction, mental health crises, and palpable poverty, set in motion by the seven deadly sins being so blatantly committed by human kind in general, that snap at my heals! I –we- need a Shepherd and a Protector of our souls! How else but by following Jesus, can I-we- find the path to live into the truth, the light and the love God has designed for us? How else can I stay safe from the assaults of Satan, who, like a roaring lion prowls around to find souls to devour, but to stay close to Christ Jesus with his rod of discipline and his Shepherd’s staff with its crook ready to snatch me out of a swamp of evil I have fallen into? Will I keep my eyes on the one true Shepherd of my heart, mind, soul and strength, and stick close by Him? Holy Spirit of Jesus, help me follow you more nearly as my Shepherd and Protector.
