Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
Isaiah 11:1-10
How do I hold myself together? Sometimes when things are ‘falling apart’ I have sought solace in buying good products, reading good books, viewing good films, going to good activities or spending time with good people. These are all fine and good, but are temporary, and cannot provide lasting peace. Sometimes I have tried to pull myself together by a set of rigorous prayers or by sheer will power in order to attend court, or deal with yet another sudden death; but even prayers and will power are limited in their power to ‘save’ me. What does hold things together? Habitually embracing the righteousness and faithfulness of God in both good times and bad leads to peace, solidarity and joy that remain beyond, through, and in spite of, challenges. Then I am ‘held together’ and do not break into pieces, or become fragmented, no matter what traumas arise. Many of the saints have similarly depended on the righteousness and faithfulness of God. Lord God, let righteousness and faithfulness hold me together. From oppression and violence he redeems their life. (Psalm 72: 14) Little things are indeed little, but to be faithful in little things is a great thing. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Soli gloriam dei .
