Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)
James 4:1-10 Becoming the greatest in any area of life, and doing whatever is necessary to get there despite the hurt to others, is the antitheses of the Gospel as proclaimed by the ministry and death of Jesus. Yet the disciples themselves were discussing this very agenda – even while Jesus was trying to tell them about his upcoming passion! Christ’s selfless, serving, way that is committed to making real, or real-izing, the welcome (the mercy) of God is much simpler than the schemes to rise to the ‘top of the world’, and leads to our Creator’s style of greatness. What am I real-izing with my life – my own kind of greatness, or the greatness of God? Christ Jesus, help me realize your way of greatness with my life. God yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made to dwell in us. (St. James quoting scripture in James 4:5) We will never be without struggle. But when we persevere with hope, courage, and confidence, we will come to fully realize in our innermost being that through the downward road of Christ we will enter with him into his glory.
