Gospel Mystery of the Day

Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119)

Holy Spirit, teach [me] the mystery of life and death in Christ Jesus ...

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Death remains the great mystery of life. Although some people have had brief experiences of heaven, most of us know life after life only by faith. But the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus stand as historical and spiritual fact.  Death in life is sure, even for the Son of God. And so is life into resurrection. This life on earth is not the whole story! Each death brings about transformation into the deeper song of life, that of our Creator longing to bring each of us, both the living and the dead, back to the fold of divine and eternal love, light and life.  As we proclaim the death of Christ with the sufferings of each day, so we, who know and love Jesus, are able to profess divine resurrection by actively living our faith, hope and love.  Holy Spirit, teach [me] the mystery of life and death in Christ.
Another thought...
Without Christ, Life and death are finite, confined by the science of keeping a human body alive, and the belief that death is the final story, or at best that souls are reincarnated into other life forms. But in Christ, “Life” signifies a human being transformed by the resurrection of Jesus, and connected to the eternity of God’s image within.  Similarly, as much as death to the world occurs for [me] on earth, through suffering aligned with and redeemed by Christ’s death on cross, I am freed form death itself. Instead of confinement in the finite, I am then free to live eternally with God –Creator, redeemer and Holy Spirit.  This is indeed a mystery.  Holy Spirit of God, teach [me] the mystery of life and death in Christ.

See, I have God for my help.  The Lord sustains my soul. (Psalm 52:8)
